Description
S23 powder from Sports Technology Labs is 2g of S23 as dry crystalline powder in a sealed pouch. S23 is a nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). It’s sold for laboratory research only.
What is S23?
S-23 is a nonsteroidal SARM of the aryl-propionamide class, made in the University of Tennessee lab of James Dalton and Duane Miller, the same group behind ostarine and andarine. It binds the androgen receptor very tightly, with a reported Ki of about 1.7 nanomolar.
It was designed as a possible male contraceptive, so most of what’s known about it comes from that line of rat work. It has never been tested in a published human trial.
The mechanism behind S23
S-23 binds the androgen receptor in muscle, bone and the prostate. The receptor complex moves into the nucleus and switches on androgen-responsive genes, the same route testosterone uses.
Because the binding is so strong, S-23 also signals back to the hypothalamus and pituitary, and LH and FSH fall sharply. That feedback is the basis of the contraception research and the reason labs track hormone levels in any S-23 model.

What the literature says about S23
Jones and colleagues described S-23 in Endocrinology in 2009. In male rats, S-23 with a small dose of estradiol benzoate suppressed sperm production, and fertility came back about 100 days after it was stopped. The same rats kept or gained muscle and bone mass while fat mass fell.
The study also showed strong suppression of LH and FSH, which is how S-23 shuts down sperm production. In castrated rats it acted as a full agonist in muscle and only a partial one in the prostate.

Where S23 fits in the range
Quick context: S23 is a high-affinity SARM studied as a male contraceptive in rats. Other compounds in the same area:
- Ostarine is the most studied SARM, with human trial data on muscle wasting
- LGD-4033 binds the androgen receptor very tightly and has a phase 1 study in healthy men
- RAD-140 is a potent nonsteroidal SARM from Radius Health, later tested in breast cancer
- RAD-150 is a benzoate ester of RAD-140 with no published studies of its own
- S4 (andarine) is an early partial-agonist SARM from GTx with rat data on muscle and bone
All of them bind the androgen receptor, but affinity, selectivity and the amount of published data differ a lot. Compare them in our SARM powders.
How labs prepare S23 powder
S23 powder ships as crystalline powder in a sealed pouch with a net weight of 2,050mg, a little over the 2g on the label. Weigh it on an analytical balance; kitchen scales aren’t accurate enough at these amounts.
To make a liquid stock, dissolve a weighed amount in PEG-400. For example:
- 2000mg in 50mL gives 40mg/mL
- 2000mg in 100mL gives 20mg/mL
Warm the solvent slightly and stir until no crystals remain. A magnetic stirrer saves time.
Storing S23 powder
Store the powder in its resealed pouch in a cool, dry, dark place. Adding a desiccant packet to a secondary container helps in humid labs.
How Sports Technology Labs tests S23 powder
The current certificate of analysis shows 99.8% by HPLC. The testing is done by MZ Biolabs, an independent lab in Tucson, Arizona, which also checks identity by mass spectrometry.
You’ll find the COA in the photo gallery above. Open it and check the date, the method and the purity figure yourself.
Both numbers matter. Purity by HPLC means little if nobody checked the identity, and that’s the job mass spectrometry does.
