Background on RU-58841
RU-58841 is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen made by Roussel Uclaf in France in the early 1990s. It’s chemically related to nilutamide and was built for use on the skin, to block androgens in hair follicles and oil glands without lowering hormone levels in the blood.
It was later licensed as PSK-3841 (also HMR-3841), but development stopped and it was never approved anywhere. It’s often sold next to SARMs even though it does the opposite at the androgen receptor: it blocks it.
The mechanism behind RU-58841
RU-58841 competes with DHT and testosterone for the androgen receptor. When it sits in the binding pocket, the receptor can’t switch on androgen-responsive genes, so the androgen signal in that tissue drops.
It’s meant to act where it’s applied. That’s the difference from 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride, which lower DHT production across the whole body.

RU-58841 research findings
Battmann and colleagues reported in 1994 that RU-58841 applied to the skin blocked androgen-driven growth of the hamster flank organ, a standard model for oil glands, with little effect elsewhere in the body.
Pan and colleagues (Endocrine, 1998) tested it on the bald scalp of stump-tailed macaques, a primate model of androgen-related hair loss, and saw regrowth of hair in treated areas. The same paper looked at its effects in prostate cancer cells.
